Geoffrey Farmer at the ICA

on April 25th, 2016 at 9:06:28 AM

Cool stuff at the ICA.

The Geoffrey Farmer exhibit is there through July 17, 2016.

365 pieces - one for each day of the year. Each sculpure has a corresponding piece of writing - a poem or saying. We looked for the pieces that matched our birthdays. The text for Paige's day is "The colour flowed through her like a rainbow".

Washington DC February 2016

on February 29th, 2016 at 12:00:00 AM

Had a great week in DC with the kids. Here's our what we did, grouped by time so you can see what's doable in one day.

(more photos)

Saturday - Amtrak from Boston to DC

Sunday

  • Nat’l Air & Space
  • Hirshhorn Museum (check out the outside sculpture garden)
  • Castle (not a lot to see on the inside, but start here if you can since it's the main Smithsonian visitor center and a good place for info)
  • Sackler Gallery - The exhibit 'Remix: Peacock Room' is very cool. We just popped in for about 20 minutes to see this one exhibit and I'm glad we did since I had heard about the story years ago.

Monday

  • American History (seeing the original flag that inspired the Star Spangled Banner was cool and it's right near the lobby, but much of the museum was closed for updating)
  • Natural History
  • National Archives

Tuesday

  • Bureau of Printing & Engraving (watch how they make money - pretty cool - we reserved tickets ahead of time)
  • Holocaust Museum (ok for my 12 year old since she's read several books about the Holocaust. It was a little heavy for my 10 year old and I stopped her from watching the more graphic videos, which are hidden behind a wall to

Wednesday

  • White House Tour*
  • RenwickGallery (small gallery with 10 interesting exhibits) right near the White House
  • Capitol Building Tour* (they're doing the first restoration project on the dome since Lincoln's presidency. Interesting, but you can't get a good look at everything inside the rotunda right now)
  • Library of Congress (very beautiful inside - worth a look)
  • American Art Museum(it's about a 10 minute walk off the mall, but great if you love contemporary art. We skipped the portraits and spent out time in the contemporary exhibit. They also have a cool inside garden and cafe that's beautiful at night.)

Thursday

  • Adams Morgan shopping [UrbanDwell - great shop]
  • Walked around Monuments in the afternoon
  • Washington Monument (You can buy tix ahead or buy them at the visitor center near the monument. We couldn't go up since the elevators were closed for repairs)
  • Vietnam Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial

Friday

  • More time at the National Museum of Natural History (6 min walk from our hotel)
  • Amtrak home

*Request WH and Capital tours through the office of your Representative. Eg. we went to http://www.markey.senate.gov/services/visiting

Lodging

  • Airbnb apartment (add link) for the first 4 nights
  • Courtyard Marriott for the last 2 nights (pool for the kids) - 900 F Street - great location, nice rooms and staff

Good restaurants

We had the gear and the enthusiasm

but something was missing...

Ah, here we go...

There were just a couple of trails open since it was just barely cold enough to make snow. After a few hours the snow was skied off so we were mostly skating down the mountain. But at least we got in one day of skiing during this weird warm December.
