Quick trip to NY

on August 23rd, 2011 at 11:45:57 AM

We squeezed in a quick stay in NY while the kids were in VT at Camp Grandma. The first stop was the Dia: Beacon on the Hudson. This musuem is amazing - so worth the trip if you haven't been. We drove through a wild summer thunderstorm and reached the city in time for a late dinner at  Celeste on Amsterdam/85th. Day two started with pastries from the Hungarian Pastry shop (on Amsterdam near Columbia) and then we spent the rest of the day walking over 60 blocks starting with the High Line, into Chelsea, West Village, SOHO and then met friends for dinner at Rohm Thai. We checked out the Museum of Art and Design the next morning and had to evacuate after the Virginia earthquake shook the building.

Natural bug repellent

on April 18th, 2011 at 7:53:26 AM

I just heard about a natural grapefruit-based insect repellent that's safe enough to drink. I can't wait until this hits the market. Here's an experpt from the NPR article.

The CDC is pushing hard to develop a completely natural insect repellent made from a chemical called nootkatone, which is found in Alaska yellow cedar trees and citrus fruit.

Dolan says nootkatone "is non-greasy, dries very quickly, and it has a very pleasant, citrus-y grapefruit odor to it."

He recently demonstrated its effectiveness as a mosquito repellent – rubbing some on his hand and then sticking it into a cage containing 50 hungry mosquitoes. When he holds the treated hand near mosquitoes they try to get away in the opposite direction as fast as they can.

Even after five minutes, Dolan has no bites on his nootkatone-treated hand.

Nootkatone is also effective against ticks, and scientists think it will work against bed bugs, head lice and other insects too.

Moreover, nootkatone is so non-toxic you could drink it. In fact, it's already an approved food additive, officially classed as "Generally Considered Safe." It's also a natural ingredient in some foods.

Drupal Gardens 1.0 released!

on March 2nd, 2011 at 7:00:00 PM

After over two years of dreaming, planning, and working long hours to get Drupal Gardens out, we did it. The original vision was to create a product that anyone can use to create a killer website. It's really fantastic to talk to the people using Gardens to create their sites and to see the cool sites they're building. We're showing off our favorites on the Sampler site.

Kids on skis

Step 1. learn to stand up on skis
Step 2. learn how to ride the ski lift
Step 3. head straight for any jump you can find - the bigger the better

Here are the girls yesterday at Nashoba Valley.
